Washington (Eurotoday) – Tesla owner Elon Musk has called for the US to leave NATO, arguing on X that it “doesn’t make sense for America to pay for the defense of Europe.”
Musk, a senior adviser to US President Donald Trump, responded to a post on X early Sunday that suggested the US should “Exit NATO now!” The Tesla Inc. co-founder and CEO replied, “We really should.”
Earlier, on March 3, Musk expressed agreement with a proposal from a conservative commentator suggesting the US should withdraw from both NATO and the United Nations. His comments come at a time when the future of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, which will mark its 76th anniversary in April, is being questioned.
What did Trump say about NATO funding obligations?
Reports on March 6 indicated that Trump had been discussing possible adjustments to the US role in NATO, favoring alliance members that allocate a certain percentage of their GDP to defense spending. Addressing reporters the same day, Trump stated that he warned NATO partners he wouldn’t support them if they failed to contribute their share.
It’s common sense, right,
Trump told journalists in the Oval Office.
If they don’t pay, I’m not going to defend them. No, I’m not going to defend them.
How are European leaders responding to NATO funding concerns?
Meanwhile, European Union leaders met in Brussels last week for an emergency summit aimed at significantly increasing defense spending. Officials are considering a European Commission proposal that includes up to €150 billion in loans to member states for defense needs, along with provisions allowing countries to use their national budgets to potentially invest €650 billion in defense over four years without triggering budgetary penalties.
In the last weeks, we’ve seen what I would call quite a turbulent development,
EU Defence Commissioner Andrius Kubilius remarked.
It’s still not perhaps very clear what finally will be the American strategy.
We really should.

Typical Elon, always ready to pull the plug on the party just when Europe’s about to foot the bill! 😏 Next, he’ll suggest we start paying for our own baguettes, too. 🍞

Looks like Elon’s got a brilliant plan: let’s just use Europe’s defense budget for fancy croissants instead. Who knew the future of global security could hinge on a few pastries? 🥐💰
