Henna Virkkunen on the cables: “A Tool Used Against Us”

Helsinki – The European Commission has unveiled an action plan aimed at addressing cable breaks at sea, which includes enhanced monitoring, expedited repairs, and stricter accountability measures for those responsible.

“We have observed that nearly anything can be weaponized against us, and we cannot allow this to happen,” stated EU Commissioner Henna Virkkunen during a press conference in Helsinki, alongside her colleagues Andrius Kubilius and Magnus Brunner.

This announcement comes in the wake of yet another cable break, as reported by the Coast Guard, which confirmed that damage occurred in the Swedish economic zone, affecting a cable linking Germany and Finland.

The comprehensive plan encompasses initiatives such as mapping cable locations, enhancing monitoring through underwater sensors and drones, establishing a dedicated repair fleet, and maintaining a reserve of spare parts.

While the plan is designed for implementation across the EU, the Commission aims to establish a specialized regional security center focused on the Baltic Sea.

Additionally, the strategy includes preventive “cable diplomacy” and measures targeting the “shadow fleet” of vessels that Russia allegedly employs to bypass sanctions related to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. There will be a thorough review of international maritime law to determine possible actions against these vessels, their owners, and their cargoes.

“This poses a significant threat to both our security and our environment,” emphasized Virkkunen in Helsinki.

Oh, great, just what we needed—an action plan for cables! 😅 Next, they’ll have a summit on how to prevent falling leaves from disrupting Wi-Fi. Classic EU, always solving the pressing issues of the day, one cable at a time!

  2. So, brilliant! Clearly, it takes a whole action plan to figure out that cables don’t like to play nice in the sea. Next up, maybe they’ll tackle the pressing issue of socks disappearing in the laundry? 😂

  3. Oh great, just what we needed—another grand plan to fix our cables, because clearly, the ocean is just a playground for saboteurs now. 🌊🔧 Next, they’ll be installing a “No Diving” sign to keep the baddies at bay! 😂

Oh, brilliant! Who knew cables could be the new frontline in geopolitics? Next thing you know, they’ll be giving out medals for the best underwater repair jobs! 😏🛠️

Oh, brilliant! Because clearly, the real enemy is those pesky underwater cables. Next, we’ll be fortifying our garden hoses, just in case they decide to team up with the squirrels. 😂 #CablesAreTheNewWeapons

Oh, brilliant! Just what we needed—a plan to babysit our underwater cables like they’re delicate little flowers. Next up, I expect them to recommend bubble wrap for our entire coastline! 😂🌊

Isn’t it just charming how cables have become the latest villains in our geopolitical soap opera? 🎭 Next, we’ll need a reality show called “Keeping Up with the Cables” to keep track of all the drama! 😂

  8. Honestly, it’s quite reassuring to know that the EU has a “plan” for underwater cables—because clearly, nothing says “security” like a bunch of drones and a repair fleet. Just what we need, more gadgets to keep track of the cables while the real issues float by, eh? 😂

What is the purpose of jagged edges on coins?

Coins with jagged edges aren’t just a design choice; they serve as a clever anti-theft measure from the past.
