Koper, Slovenia’s largest coastal city, is set to commence renovations on the historic Libertas salt warehouse in the upcoming weeks. In approximately 18 months, the 200-year-old structure will be transformed into a vibrant cultural center, featuring two halls with a total capacity of around 1,000 people. The renovation project is estimated to cost around six million euros, with half of the funding coming from the European Union.
“It is clear that Koper is in need of a cultural hub, and we are on our way to creating one,” stated Koper’s mayor, Aleš Bržan, during a press conference at Libertas on Monday. The architectural firm ARP Studio, responsible for the project, noted the challenges involved in designing new spaces, as the building measures 100 meters in length but only 12 meters in width, while also being a protected monument. The municipality acquired the building, located about 20 kilometers from Trieste, back in 2020.
The construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of the summer in 2026. Bržan also announced plans for open house events every two months, inviting the public to observe the progress of the renovations. Additionally, Bržan highlighted the ongoing development of the surrounding area, including a new passenger terminal that is expected to welcome its first cruise ship passengers within two months.
