Exploding FPV Drone Goggles Injure Russian Pilots
First-person view (FPV) drones, also known as kamikaze drones, have emerged as one of the most lethal and cost-effective weapons in Russia’s war against Ukraine. These remotely operated unmanned devices, loaded with explosives, have been used against Ukrainian tanks, soldiers, and even civilians in Kherson, as reported by Al Jazeera.
In January, a batch of FPV drone goggles—essential for piloting these drones—was donated to Russian forces. However, in early February, Russian pro-war bloggers reported multiple incidents in which the goggles exploded upon activation, severely injuring operators. At least eight pilots in Russia’s Kursk region and the occupied territories of Donetsk and Luhansk reportedly suffered blindness as a result.
According to Russian sources, the goggles contained C-4 explosives, a detonator, and a battery, which detonated once switched on. Russian intelligence has launched an investigation, treating the case as an act of sabotage, according to Vladimir Rogov, chairman of the Russian Public Chamber’s committee on sovereignty.
Meanwhile, Ukraine’s military intelligence has hinted that such incidents will continue. A Ukrainian official suggested that similar operations could extend further, including into Russian Siberia.
