Paris (Eurotoday) – A French government spokesperson stated that France does not understand why U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was responsible for Russia’s attack and the ongoing war.
“We don’t understand the logic very well,”
Spokesperson Sophie Primas told reporters, describing
“the diverse, varied and often incomprehensible comments by President Trump.”
She noted that Trump had made several statements on Ukraine in recent days without consulting his European allies.
Trump, speaking to reporters, stated:
“You’ve been there for three years,” referring to Ukraine’s exclusion from discussions between Russia and the United States. “You should’ve never started it. You could have made a deal.”
How is Europe responding to US-Russia talks that exclude Ukraine?
Ukraine and its European partners were shocked by the decision of the US and Russia to hold peace discussions in Saudi Arabia this week. Even before the talks began, some European politicians criticized Trump’s administration for offering concessions to Moscow last week by denying NATO membership to Ukraine and suggesting it was unrealistic for Kyiv to believe it could reclaim the 20% of its territory currently under Russian control.
Ukraine has insisted it will not accept any agreement imposed on it without its approval, a stance echoed by European leaders, while Russia continues to refuse to surrender land it has seized.
French President Emmanuel Macron is set to hold an informal meeting on Ukraine with several European leaders and NATO ally Canada at 4 p.m. (1500 GMT), following a similar discussion involving the UK, Italy, Spain, Germany, the European Union, Denmark, and the Netherlands.
Additionally, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy responded to Trump’s assertion that Ukraine was to blame for Russia’s 2022 full-scale invasion, stating that the U.S. president was caught in a Russian disinformation bubble. Speaking ahead of meetings with Trump’s Ukraine envoy, a day after Trump remarked that Ukraine “should never have started” the war, Zelenskiy said he hoped Trump’s administration would have “more truth” about Ukraine.

You know, it’s always refreshing to hear a former president giving lessons in geopolitics from his golden tower—maybe he thinks Ukraine should’ve just offered Russia a nice croissant instead? 🥐😏
