The European Union is steadfast in its support for the two-state solution, emphasizing that “Gaza is a vital component of a future Palestinian state.” This statement comes in response to remarks made by US President Donald Trump regarding the Gaza Strip and the displacement of its inhabitants.
When asked about President Trump’s comments, Anwar El Anani, the Commission’s spokesperson for foreign policy, reiterated, “The EU remains firmly committed to the two-state solution, which we believe is the only viable path to achieving lasting peace for both Israelis and Palestinians. Gaza is an integral part of a future Palestinian state.”
El Anani also highlighted that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve peace, acknowledging the recent ceasefire as a positive step. However, he emphasized that additional measures are necessary to achieve a permanent resolution to hostilities and to ensure stability in the region. He further reminded that among the five key conditions outlined by the Commission President in November 2023 for Gaza, the recognition of Gaza as an essential part of the future Palestinian state and the cessation of forced displacements of Palestinians are paramount.
