24-Year-Old Kortrijk Man Accused of Terrorizing Sint-Elisabeth Appears in Court

The man, now 24, is accused of hurling stones at rooftops, balconies, and terraces in the Sint-Elisabeth neighbourhood in Kortrijk. Notably, he lives in close proximity to the affected area. The first reports of nighttime stone-throwing activity emerged during the summer of 2022. Residents were alarmed by both small and large stones being thrown onto rooftops and outdoor living spaces, causing considerable damage. A man narrowly avoided serious injury when a stone weighing nearly two kilograms landed near him. Later that year, residents became even more frightened by the sound of air gunfire at night. Although not all incidents have been definitively linked to a single individual, suspicion has increasingly focused on this 24-year-old resident.

Despite increased patrols and extensive investigation, police were initially unable to apprehend the perpetrator in the act. However, authorities now believe a man from Sint-Denijsestraat is responsible. According to investigators, he deliberately orchestrated these events to appear as though outsiders were responsible, effectively misleading both his neighbours and law enforcement.

Ironically, the suspected individual played an active role in the local community. He was a prominent member of the local SAVE network and presented himself publicly as a concerned resident advocating for peace. He even led discussions aimed at finding the stone thrower, portraying himself as a victim rather than the instigator.

The case is due to be heard in court this November. Police are also seeking financial compensation from the government to recover the costs related to the investigation. Measures included increased patrols, the deployment of special units, and the use of drones and thermal imaging cameras. Attorney Randall Huysentruyt commented:

“The police have been in the neighbourhood a lot, even with special units. We will have to calculate the exact costs for this later, but that will quickly be 20,000 euros.”
