Storm Amy threatens Brussels Jubelpark statue

Brussels (Eurotoday Newspaper) – Brussels faced Storm Amy with 90 km/h winds, prompting firefighters to remove a dangerous statue at Cinquantenaire Park; over 60 emergency calls were handled.

As VRT News reported, on October 4, 2025, Storm Amy hit Brussels with wind gusts of 90 kilometres per hour. This caused debris to cover streets and parks. Even firefighters had to come to the Cinquantenaire Park (Jubelpark) to secure one of the historic statues that had become loose.

What threat does Storm Amy pose to the statue at Brussels’ Jubelpark?

At the park, emergency services fenced off the area and took down the statue. Authorities asked locals to remain vigilant and to limit travel to essential purposes. Residents were also told to keep away from parks and from roads with large trees.

Officials mentioned that as the Brussels fire department had to take down the statue, all of their resources were used. The firefighters, to carry out the task, were very careful with their ladder trucks and used ropes to raise the old statue so it could be safely lowered to the ground.

Earlier today, October 4, 2025, the storm also caused the Sint-Pieters-Woluwe apartment building’s scaffolding to collapse. There were no reported injuries. The storm caused more than 60 emergency calls to the fire department.

Brussels has seen similar incidents in the past. In June 2020, during protests against colonial monuments, activists removed statue. A statue which had been previously vandalised. In February 2024, a statue from the John Cockerill monument was toppled during farmers’ protests that blocked streets with tractors and caused clashes with police. The fallen statue was later repaired.
