Students to learn about ‘heroes of Russia from ancient times to the present day’
In the upcoming school year, Russian schools will allocate 32 hours to the state program “Conversations about Important Things,” based on a curriculum released by the Institute for the Study of Childhood, Family and Education at the Ministry of Education on August 26. This program includes lessons centered on war, military heroism, and national identity.
A significant part of the program is the December lesson “Russia – the Land of Victors,” designed for Heroes of the Fatherland Day. Students will learn about “heroes of Russia from ancient times to the present day” and the role of courage and military traditions as “an integral part of Russian identity and cultural code.”
On February 23, Defender of the Fatherland Day, the lesson “A Hero from the Neighboring Yard” will highlight local examples of military valor. The program emphasizes that students should recognize that in every region, there are “outstanding, brave, and hardworking heroes.”
On Victory Day, May 9, the curriculum will feature “Songs of War,” focusing on military music’s role in fostering a “sense of belonging to the nation’s history” and preserving World War II memory.
Other sessions such as “Conscience in Us” and “Values That Unite Us” will present traditional values as part of the nation’s resilience during wartime.
Overall, the curriculum continues to emphasize wartime narratives, portraying Russia as a “country of victors,” with collective memory and identity closely linked to military sacrifice and tradition.
It was previously noted that Russia has doubled its funding for the 2025 Yunarmiya, a youth movement that promotes military training and ideological indoctrination among teenagers, including young children, with $12.3 million allocated for military training and patriotic education.
