Ljubljana – The Ministry of Cohesion and Regional Development has approved over 14 million euros of European funding for a public call aimed at co-financing research, development, and demonstration-pilot projects in the Zasavje and Savinja-Šaleška coal mining regions through the Just Transition Fund.
The ministry stated, “We aim to support at least 23 consortia of companies in both coal mining regions that will undertake projects focused on developing new or improved products, processes, or services with enhanced value and market potential, thereby boosting economic competitiveness.”
Minister Aleksander Jevšek highlighted that the non-repayable European funds from the Just Transition Fund will facilitate the economic restructuring of the Zasavje and Savinja-Šaleška coal mining areas, steering them towards a low-carbon, circular, and digital economy.
The Zasavje coal mining region will receive 4.42 million euros, while the Savinja-Šaleška region will be allocated 10 million euros. This call is part of broader efforts to restructure both coal mining areas, which will receive over 250 million euros from the EU Just Transition Fund, with a completion goal set for 2033 at the latest.
