COPENHAGEN (ANP) – Tensions within the EU regarding Orbán have been simmering for some time and are now being voiced publicly. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk questioned Orbán on X on Thursday about his allegiance: whether he supports Russia or Ukraine, like the majority of Europe.
Orbán characterized the meetings on Wednesday and Thursday as a “fight,” according to his spokesperson on X. He described facing “coordinated attacks” from countries including Croatia, Germany, and the European Commission.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof remarked that the “principled disagreement” between most EU nations and Hungary “emerges each time.”
Schoof noted that in the summit with EU leaders, Hungary holds “a very different perspective” on addressing the war of Russian aggression. Orbán suggested that the EU should engage in negotiations now, while the EU maintains that talks should only occur when Ukraine is in a strong position and Russia is under significant pressure, as the Prime Minister specified.
Following the discussions, Orbán told reporters that the EU has a strategy in place to defeat Russia, to which Hungary is opposed. “Europe must pursue negotiations for peace, not for endless wars,” he stated.
