Salzburg (APA) – At the Salzburg Europe Summit, EU Migration Commissioner Magnus Brunner urged the European Union to use its influence more effectively in trade, development, and visa policies to support its migration strategy. Brunner stated on Monday, according to the speech text, that the EU needs to ensure that “our migration priorities are respected by third countries.” He stressed the importance of enhanced migration diplomacy overall.
Brunner proposed the creation of a European system for the return of irregular migrants, asserting, “When people are asked to leave the EU, they will leave, regardless of their location within the EU. This process will follow common rules in every EU nation. We must determine who can remain in the European Union, not the smugglers! All these measures aim to establish order in Europe.”
He emphasized that control over migration is essential for developing legal migration pathways, which requires greater solidarity among EU states and a more equitable distribution of responsibilities, as outlined in the ongoing migration and asylum pact. He noted that the EU has assumed considerable responsibility during the refugee crisis, stating, “But without a system, without appropriate regulations, without control. Ten years after the refugee crisis, we must ensure a functional system,” he asserted. “We are now approaching the most significant reform of European migration policy.”
“Do not take Europe’s security for granted”
Brunner called on the EU to foster unity and envision a future for the European Union in light of the “new era of geostrategic competition.” He remarked, “Together we must acknowledge that Europe’s security cannot be taken for granted. By acting collectively, we can ensure that no threat is insurmountable, maintaining the security of our Union.” (29.09.2025)
