Austria Appoints Gregor Schusterschitz as New EU Ambassador

Vienna (APA) – The current head of the International Law Office at the Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Gregor Schusterschitz, has been appointed as Austria’s new ambassador to the European Union in Brussels. This decision was made by the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, following a request by Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger from the liberal NEOS, as announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Schusterschitz has extensive experience in Brussels, having previously held positions as Deputy Permanent Representative to the EU, Brexit Delegate, and Head of the Legal Department at the Permanent Representation in Brussels, as well as serving as Ambassador in Luxembourg. At 55 years old, he is also an honorary professor at the University of Innsbruck, where he frequently publishes work on international and European law. Additionally, he teaches at the University of Innsbruck, the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna, and the Federal Academy of Administration in Austria. Schusterschitz takes over from Thomas Oberreiter, who requested his dismissal in July. (01.10.2025)
