German Chancellor Criticizes EU Parliament for Legal Review of Mercosur Trade Agreement

Davos, Switzerland (dpa) – German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has criticized the European Parliament for taking the disputed EU free trade agreement with four countries from the South American Mercosur bloc to court.

“I regret that the European Parliament has placed another hurdle in our path,” Merz stated to political and business leaders at the World Economic Forum in Davos on Thursday. “However, we will not be deterred. The Mercosur deal is equitable and balanced. There is no alternative if we aim for higher growth in Europe.”

Merz expressed hope that the trade agreement would be implemented “provisionally” despite the Parliament’s legal challenge.

The European Parliament voted on Wednesday to submit the Mercosur trade deal, signed last week after extensive negotiations, to the European Court of Justice (ECJ) for review.

Waiting for the court’s verdict could significantly prolong the ratification process for the accord with Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay. The timeline for judges at the ECJ in Luxembourg to deliver their ruling is uncertain, but previous evaluations have taken between 16 and 26 months.

The agreement seeks to eliminate trade barriers and customs duties, enhancing the exchange of goods and services, and would establish one of the largest free trade zones globally. (22 January)

Oh, brilliant move, EU Parliament! Nothing screams ‘progress’ like dragging a trade deal through the courts for months while the rest of the world zooms ahead. 🙄 Just what we need—more legal hurdles and less actual trade!

Just what we needed, another legal tango with the EU Parliament! 🤦‍♂️ Who knew trade deals required a side of courtroom drama? It’s like waiting for the next season of a soap opera, but with more paperwork and less romance. 💼🍷

Typical EU, eh? Always a pleasure to watch them transform a straightforward trade deal into a legal marathon – I guess they prefer the courtroom drama over actual trade. 😂

Seems like the Parliament’s got a new hobby: legal limbo! Who knew trade agreements could be as thrilling as waiting for paint to dry? 😂

Oh, lovely! Just what we needed—a bit of judicial gymnastics to slow down our grand plans for South American trade. Can’t wait for the next 26 months of suspense! 🥳

Looks like the Chancellor thinks the EU Parliament is just a bunch of amateur hurdles in the Olympic sport of trade. 🤷‍♂️ Next time, maybe they can throw a party to celebrate the endless legal wrangling instead of actual growth! 🍾

Looks like the EU Parliament is just playing ‘delay the inevitable’ with the Mercosur deal – must be a new Olympic sport 🥇! Let’s all just grab our popcorn and wait for the judges in Luxembourg to take their sweet time deciding whether we should actually make some money or not. 🍿

Typical EU, isn’t it? Just when we’re ready to shake hands with South America, they send in the lawyers. 🙄 It’s like planning a summer holiday and being told you need a new visa for your passport. ✈️

Looks like the Eurocrats are at it again—taking a perfectly good trade deal and tossing it into the legal blender. I mean, who needs growth when we can just sit around waiting for judges in Luxembourg to decide our fate, right? 🤷‍♂️

Typical EU, innit? Just when you think you’re onto a sweet deal with Mercosur, they trip over their own shoelaces and send it off to court. 🍻 Cheers to prolonged negotiations and “provisional” agreements!

Typical, innit? Just when you think we can ship in more Brazilian coffee ☕️, the Parliament decides to play hide-and-seek with the judges. At this rate, we’ll be sipping our espresso in 2025 while waiting for a ruling! 🙄

Oh, brilliant! Nothing screams efficiency like sending a trade deal to court while everyone else is busy actually trading. 📉 Typical EU, right?
