The Netherlands Aims to Advance the 19th Sanctions Package Against Russia

COPENHAGEN (ANP) – Approval for new sanctions depends on all 27 EU member states, and Hungary is once again hindering the process.

Prime Minister Schoof expressed hope that Hungary can be persuaded to cooperate. If that does not happen, “we need to find another way to implement that sanctions package,” potentially without Hungary. “It is crucial to maintain pressure on Russia,” he emphasized.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for the rapid approval of the EU’s nineteenth sanctions package against Russia during the EPC on Thursday. He stated that this is “urgently needed,” emphasizing that “Russia still has the means to continue fighting, and that is not good.”

EU leaders have yet to reach a consensus on the new sanctions package, which notably includes a ban on the import of Russian liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2027.

Zelensky supports the stance of American President Donald Trump, who advocates for Europe to entirely halt imports of Russian oil and gas. Only with such action will Trump consider imposing sanctions against Russia.

Zelensky mentioned that imports from the U.S. or other nations could supply sufficient oil and gas. “The guys from Hungary need to hear this clearly,” he stated. Hungary has thus far stalled the nineteenth sanctions package, citing its reliance on Russian oil and gas.
