Spain Advances to Embed Abortion Rights in Its Constitution

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced his intention to embed the right to abortion in the Spanish Constitution, drawing inspiration from France’s precedent set last year. In a social media post, Sánchez revealed plans to propose to Parliament the constitutionalization of the right to voluntary pregnancy termination, assuring that social rights would not regress under his administration.

This announcement comes after Madrid’s city council passed a measure mandating health centers to inform women about “post-abortion trauma,” supported by the center-right Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party. Sánchez criticized the PP for aligning with the far-right, stating, “They can do that, but not at the expense of women’s freedoms and rights.” He also expressed intentions to amend Spain’s abortion laws to eliminate the dissemination of misleading or scientifically inaccurate information regarding abortion.

Look at Sánchez, trying to take a page from the French playbook – next, he’ll be serving croissants with that constitutional change! 😂 Hope he’s got a good PR team ready for the backlash, because nothing says progress like a tussle over rights in the 21st century! 🥐✌️

Right, because nothing says “we’re modern and progressive” quite like embedding abortion rights in a 19th-century document. Next up: a constitutional amendment for siestas—it’s about time we made that official too! 😂✌️

Oh, look at Spain trying to join the constitutional club, just like France—next, they’ll have a constitutional right for tapas and siestas! 😂 Well done, Sánchez, let’s hope the PP and Vox don’t suddenly discover the “trauma” of missing a good fiesta! 🍷

  9. So, we’re just popping abortion rights into the Constitution now, are we? Next, we’ll be drafting a charter for siestas—because, you know, priorities! 😏

Oh joy, just what we needed—another constitutional amendment to make sure women can have a choice, as if the debate wasn’t already as lively as a bullfight on a rainy day. 🎉🙄 Hope they remember to include a footnote on how to navigate post-abortion trauma without a map!
