Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has announced his intention to embed the right to abortion in the Spanish Constitution, drawing inspiration from France’s precedent set last year. In a social media post, Sánchez revealed plans to propose to Parliament the constitutionalization of the right to voluntary pregnancy termination, assuring that social rights would not regress under his administration.
This announcement comes after Madrid’s city council passed a measure mandating health centers to inform women about “post-abortion trauma,” supported by the center-right Popular Party (PP) and the far-right Vox party. Sánchez criticized the PP for aligning with the far-right, stating, “They can do that, but not at the expense of women’s freedoms and rights.” He also expressed intentions to amend Spain’s abortion laws to eliminate the dissemination of misleading or scientifically inaccurate information regarding abortion.
